Music Consulting Services

Years ago, the process of music production encompassed a broad range of elements – including song analysis, arrangement, pre-production, etc. – well before the undertaking of (and continuing through) the physical recording itself. Over time, as project budgets were being whittled away, many of these elements were deemed peripheral and time consuming, and were gradually retired from the process, subsequently falling by the wayside. In retrospect, it is clear that, absent these elements, the quality of recent recordings has suffered considerably. This is compounded by the reality that recording budgets and resources to make a proper recording are now virtually nonexistent. In the interest of making these processes available to everyone, they are offered here as individual services, to be engaged by artists as their needs and budgets provide.

Pre-production

Pre-production is a dying art but has been an intrinsic part of making great recordings for decades. This process incorporates:

  • Song analysis
  • Song repair
  • Project analysis
  • Live rehearsal

Song analysis

Most artists that write songs have difficulty being objective about their own work. Performer/songwriters often benefit from outside guidance and perspective. The song analysis process also includes:

  • Song assessment
  • Song repair

Pre-recording project analysis

This process is about project overview, and incorporates:

  • Song assessment
  • Assembling of songs for recording project (or demo)
  • Assessing and itemizing steps to make project ready for recording

Pre-pre-production

A modern and practical approach to prepping a recording that is conducted remotely. Pre-pre-production incorporates:

  • Song analysis
  • Song repair
  • Project analysis

Recording production

Musical artists of the past relied on their producer as a creative collaborator who would mentor them through the recording process, constantly challenge them to improve the quality of their work, and bring objectivity to the table at all times. The collaborative effort lifts up the quality of an artist’s work and vastly improves it. Contemporary artists can benefit similarly. Recording production includes:

  • One-on-one work with artists
  • Song analysis
  • Song repair
  • Project analysis
  • Pre-pre-production
  • Pre-production
  • In-studio recording to project completion

Artist Incubation

Artist development used to be one of the most important aspects of record-making. Until about fifteen years ago, all record companies had artist development departments, working closely with their artists and assisting in their creative growth. Artist incubation is an extrapolation of this concept, redesigned to address the needs of each individual artist. It incorporates:

  • One-on-one work with artists
  • Song analysis
  • Song repair
  • Project analysis
  • Pre-production
  • Record production
